Overview

The Squires Group is seeking a Senior Level Control Systems Engineer for a direct hire opportunity with our client in Springfield, VA. This is a key role supporting the safe and reliable delivery of natural gas by designing, developing, and supporting process control, automation, and communication systems for gas control operations and field assets, including plants and gate stations.

 

Due to client contract requirements, only U.S. Citizens will be considered. Candidates must be willing and able to participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call schedule. Occasional travel may be required for field support or vendor coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Engineer and implement hardware/software automation and control solutions for field facilities (plants, gate stations).
  • Collaborate with internal teams to define requirements for process control, communication, and information systems.
  • Design control system layouts including control panels, loop diagrams, and electrical schematics.
  • Develop PLC code using industrial programming languages to support automation for gas flow, pressure, temperature, odorization, and plant equipment (compressors, boilers, valves, etc.).
  • Implement remote monitoring/control systems using ICS protocols over Ethernet and serial networks.
  • Interface with vendors and troubleshoot communication systems using industrial protocols.
  • Configure and program SCADA systems and develop graphical interfaces to monitor the gas delivery infrastructure.
  • Write SQL-based queries and configure data archiving tools to support analytics, reporting, and compliance.
  • Provide technical direction to engineering teams regarding I/O requirements, cabling, instrumentation, and system interfaces.
  • Support system startup, commissioning, and ensure equipment performs within design parameters.
  • Deliver training and technical support to operations teams for automation and control systems.
  • Lead project management efforts across internal teams and ensure timely delivery of automation projects.
  • Research new technologies, evaluate vendors, and support continuous improvement of control processes.
  • Develop detailed documentation including maintenance procedures, programming standards, and wiring schematics

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (or related discipline) required.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience with industrial control systems, including PLC and SCADA technologies.
  • Must be able to DESIGN control panels
  • Strong knowledge of process control theory and instrumentation (electronic, pneumatic, mechanical).
  • Prior experience in natural gas or propane processing and measurement is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in at least two SCADA platforms and two PLC platforms is required.
  • Skilled in interpreting P&IDs and translating them into control logic, wiring diagrams, and sequence development.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, OPC, etc.) and troubleshooting networked systems.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite (Project, Visio, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Proven ability to support system commissioning and to respond to operational issues under pressure.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to document technical procedures and collaborate across teams.
  • Strong judgment and calm decision-making skills when working with a volatile commodity.

Compensation

  • Competitive salary range of $100K-$130K, based on experience, qualifications, and certifications.  The pay range is subject to change and may be modified at any time.
