Overview

Our client, a well-established organization based in Annapolis, MD, is seeking a Senior Staff Accountant for a temporary project-based assignment. This role will focus on reconciling and cleaning up financial records to ensure accuracy across current and prior reporting periods. The ideal candidate is an experienced accounting professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and is comfortable navigating complex financial data.

 

This position requires onsite presence in Annapolis, with the possibility of occasional hybrid work-from-home days.

Responsibilities

  • Perform in-depth reviews of general ledger accounts to ensure proper classification and accuracy
  • Reconcile key balance sheet accounts including cash, A/R, A/P, and deferred revenue
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies, historical posting errors, and inconsistencies
  • Assist in restating or amending financial statements from previous periods, if needed
  • Prepare and document journal entries, adjusting entries, and supporting schedules
  • Support both month-end and year-end close processes
  • Partner with the CFO to enhance reporting workflows and documentation standards
  • Contribute to audit preparation efforts, ensuring compliance with GAAP
  • Recommend process improvements and strengthen internal accounting controls

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline; CPA preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a nonprofit or multi-fund environment
  • Strong working knowledge of GAAP and financial statement preparation
  • Demonstrated experience with cleanup, reconciliation, and prior-period adjustments
  • Experience with QuickBooks Desktop is a plus
  • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
